Trees are an important resource in the game, as they provide essential materials such as logs or sticks. Cannibals will react negatively if they see you chopping down trees or possibly even if they see the stumps. via
What does red paint do in The Forest?
The red paint induces a passive, non-hostile state in the cannibals, who will sit and kneel, or at the very least, back away.
